Globe builds robust data privacy culture, concludes successful Privacy Awareness Month

(L-R) Atty. Irish Salandanan-Almeida, Globe’s Chief Privacy Officer; Jenny Echevarria, Globe’s Vice President for Commercial Strategic Services Group and Enterprise Data Office Group; and Pia Gonzalez-Colby, Globe’s Chief Marketing Officer at Globe’s Privacy Awareness Month program.

Globe recently held its third annual Privacy Awareness Month, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to ingraining a robust data privacy culture within its diverse workforce. With the theme "See Privacy," the activity was synchronized with the National Privacy Commission's (NPC’s) Privacy Awareness Week in May.

Globe’s Information Security and Data Privacy (ISDP) Group unveiled an engaging series of awareness campaigns, focusing on data privacy compliance, best practices, and useful tips for employees across all roles. These aimed to encourage employees to view data privacy through the lens of responsible data custodians.

The celebration culminated in keynote presentations by lawyer John Fajardo, a partner at the Fajardo Law Offices, and Rob Real, Vice President and Group Data Protection Officer at GCash. Both speakers emphasized the critical role employees play in data privacy and protection, dispelling many misconceptions about a company’s data privacy culture.

Real pointed out: "Privacy is about control over information, it's not about secrecy." Echoing the importance of a responsible attitude, Fajardo remarked, "Your attitude towards workplace policy is only as good as how you value your own personal privacy. If you're careless and carefree, chances are you're going to bring that to the workplace."

Meanwhile, in a Fireside Chat with Globe’s Chief Privacy Officer Irish Salandanan-Almeida, company leaders discussed the challenges of integrating privacy policies into an evolving business landscape, the importance of shaping a privacy culture within their teams, and the values needed to safeguard customer data.

"It’s about data privacy not just being a law that we have to comply with, not just a box that we have to tick, but something that creates business value and increases customer trust," said Salandanan-Almeida.

Meanwhile, Globe’s Chief Marketing Officer Pia Gonzalez-Colby called for full commitment to privacy regulations.

Madaling magsabi na we will just box-tick and comply for the sake of compliance. However, if we take that approach, sayang ‘yung ilaw, and we will be missing the point. Don't let a good regulation go to waste. The data privacy law gives us an opportunity to rethink how we approach things, and put the customer's security at the center of our thinking, she said.

On the other hand, Jenny Echevarria, Globe’s Vice President for Commercial Strategic Services Group and Enterprise Data Office Group, highlighted the relationship between privacy and trust.

"At the core of privacy, it's about trust and respect. Trust is something that we aspire for as a brand. It takes years to build a relationship with our customers but only minutes to lose it,” she stressed.

As Globe prepares for future challenges in data privacy, the company invites everyone to join in its mission to foster a culture that respects and values privacy in all its aspects.

Globe's Privacy Awareness Month is an important reflection of its immersive and proactive approach to data privacy awareness, compliance, and education, resonating with its commitment to safeguarding user data and empowering employees to be responsible data custodians.

Keep Coastal Road safe for everyone-Zozobrado

Councilor Jesus Joseph Zozobrado reminded motorists and pedestrians to prioritize their safety when traversing the newly-inaugurated Davao Coastal Road.

Segment A of the road project, which covers the shoreline of Bago Aplaya through Times Beach or the Talomo-Matina area, was opened to traffic on July 1.

“While I understand the excitement of the people, I would like to caution motorists and passersby to make safety a priority for everyone,” Zozobrado said in a privilege speech during last Tuesday’s City Council session.

Zozobrado’s reminder came amid reports that motorists have been making unnecessary stops in the middle of the Coastal Road to take photos.

Zozobrado, who previously chaired the council committee on public works, said the project was not completed overnight. “I had the opportunity to work with hundreds of people who tirelessly pushed for the completion of the Davao City Coastal Bypass Road Project,” he added.

He said the Coastal Road Project was constructed, primarily to ease the flow of traffic along the Matina-Ulas-Toril section.

“The scenic view we have along the coastal road is a bonus that every Dabawenyo should be thankful for,” he said.

Just like any road, Zozobrado said, the Coastal Road is governed by traffic laws, which vehicles and pedestrians alike should follow. Motorists making unnecessary stops along the busy road inconvenience other motorists and endanger lives, he added.

He also reminded those enjoying the facilities of the Coastal Road including the playground, to clean up and not leave garbage in the area as it is not only an inconvenience but also unhealthy to both people and the environment. It also means additional expenses to the government, he added.

“We can still enjoy the Coastal Road without violating existing laws. Jogging and walking are allowed especially along Bago Aplaya, for as long as you stay on the sidewalk, bike lanes and open park,” he said.

The Public Safety and Security Office, the Davao City Police Office and the City Transport and Traffic Management Office and Task Force Davao are regularly monitoring the Coastal Road.

“But with or without the authorities, let us show that we Dabawenyos are disciplined, and capable of self-regulation,” he said.

Are you a fully-verified GCash customer? Register your SIM on the GCash app and get 1GB free Globe data

Globe reminds its subscribers that fully-verified GCash users have the convenience of registering their SIMs directly through the GCash app, with the added incentive of receiving 1GB of data upon successful registration.

Republic Act (RA) 11934, also known as the SIM Registration Act, requires all SIMs to be registered with local telecom providers. It aims to bolster consumer security and protection against malicious activities such as mobile scams, smishing, and fraud.

With the July 25, 2023 deadline for SIM registration fast approaching, Globe encourages its fully-verified GCash users to utilize the streamlined registration process available through the GCash app, among other channels.

"As a leading mobile service provider in the nation, Globe is steadfastly dedicated to safeguarding our customers from potential security threats. By opening registration through the GCash app, we hope to facilitate a seamless process that keeps our users protected, connected, and compliant with the law,” said Globe Group President and CEO Ernest Cu.

Upon opening the GCash app, unregistered fully-verified users will receive a prompt to register their SIMs. After following and completing the instructions, they can expect a reward of 1GB of free data.

Failure to comply with the SIM Registration Act may result in SIM deactivation, leading to disruption of mobile services, including sending and receiving texts, making calls, internet browsing, video streaming, financial transactions and deliveries among others.

In addition to the GCash app, non-verified GCash customers and other Globe subscribers can register via the GlobeOne app or the Globe microsite https://new.globe.com.ph/simreg. In-person assistance is also available at Globe Stores and EasyHubs across the nation.

"To avoid any service disruptions, we urge all our users to register their SIMs at the earliest. This reminder is part of our broader commitment to customer service and cyber security," said Cu.
