Red Ribbon opens newest store at NCCC Mall Davao

The Red Ribbon franchise of Wilson Bangayan opened up its newest branch at NCCC Mall davao yesterday.

It was Bangayan who simultaneously put up Red Ribbon stalls/booth at Victoria Plaza, Gaisano Mall and NCCC Davao a few years ago. This is however the first full Red Ribbon food store under the Jollibee Group which recently acquired the food company.

"You are assured that our products are always fresh from the Red Ribbon commissary here in Davao," Red Ribbon VisMin Operations Head Michelle Leslie Llanos said.

Red Ribbon also has a full food store at SM City Davao. The NCCC Davao Mall food store will be opened to the public starting today so go try their newest cake concoctions as well as meals.

Vice Mator Sara Duterte, who was present during yesterday's event, said this is a siginificant contribution to Davao City's economy which is private-sector led. She encouraged consumers to start tasting Red Ribbon's products.

Christmas At NCCC Mall

The NCCC Mall in Matina has gone all out this Christmas, constructing two giant Christmas billboards along the entrance side. The billboards contain the mosaic-like images of kids which appropriately sends out NCCC Mall's message--that Christmas is truly for the kids and the kids at heart. It is only with a kid's heart that one is able to appreciate the true meaning of Christmas sans the expensive blinking Christmas lights, the sumptuous noche buena and even the expensive shopping list. On the sides of the billboards are giant parols customized for the design,

However, the Maa side of NCCC Mall is equally if not more attractive. Take a look at these photos.

Davao Housing Fair Starts At NCCC Mall Today

Dabawenyos who are planning to purchase real estate property should take advantage of the three-day Housing Fair being held at the NCCC Mall in Matina, Davao City from October 29 to 31, 2008.

A total of 14,830 units worth P4 billion have been sold during the first Housing Fair in 2006.

Take your pick from any of the 12 exhibitors participating in the Housing Fair including Uraya Land Development Inc., Robinsons Home Inc., Kisan Lu Realty, Filinvest Land Inc., Primeland Marketing, Davao Joyful Homes, DMC Urban Property Development, Inc., Santos Land Development Corporation, HLC Construction and Development Corporation, Crown Communities, Foothills Realthy and Development Corporation, Chula Vista Residences and Holcim Philippines.

Various housing units will be on sale during the Housing Fair according to Rose Taasan, project office of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC). Encouraged to avail of this opportunity are Overseas Filipino Workers and private sector employees since most of the housing units that will be offered during the fair are very affordable. The buyers can also look forward to the fast tracking of the disposition of assets foreclosed by key government financial institutions and shelter agencies.

Those who intend to process their applications during the Fair should bring their Proof of Income, Community Tax Certificate and marriage certificate if it applies.

Davao Movies: Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Most Dabawenyos will be spending their holidays (August 22-Friday and August 25-Monday are non-working holidays) outdoors due to the Kadayawan Festival so it is understandable that there's nothing much to see in the theaters expect extended flicks like Wall-E (which is a very good environmental movie that simplifies the effects of waste mismanagement and global warming to both kids and adults) and A Very Special Love.

However, there is a new movie showing so tag along your children to Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It is really much like the Star Wars movie version and focuses on the Galactic Republic conflict. See the Jedi Knights along with their clone army fight it out with Chancellor Palpatine's separatist movers. Not sure though if this is a cartoon version since the posters seem to be more like cartoon images rather than humans.

Movie schedules

P70M Watts Call Center Opens At NCCC Mall Today

A 250-work station call center located at the 4th floor of NCCC Mall in Matina opens in Davao City today. This is the largest mall-based call center in the city with a capitalization of P60 to P70 million.

Derek Rice, Facility Director of Western Watts, said they will start its operations with only 250 seats but looks to open another 400 seats for the second phase of the project bringing the total to 650 seats by August next year. Western Watts is considered one of the largest data collection companies in the United States with expertise in market research.

Western Watts is one of the pioneering BPOs in Cebu but the company's operations there experienced some problems leading to a massive layoffs in December last year.

Unlike most call centers in the city which is experiencing a fast turn over of agents due to the work schedule and pressure of selling, Western Watts call center agents are expected to stay on because they only have one shift and that is from 4:30AM to 11:30 AM. No selling for these agents, only cold calling for market research.

Rice said they are eyeing an expansion by next year and when the facilities and the staff are ready then they might add additional shifts for calling UK and US companies.

Cheap Thrills For Dabawenyos At The Newest Carnival In Town

Davao City may be one of the most livable cities in Asia but it lacks family entertainment facilities like the Enchanted Kingdom in Laguna or the Star City in Manila. I am not sure why, despite the prevailing peace and order in the city and the economic boom in the city, an investor has yet to invest in a family entertainment facility in the city.

It is thus not surprising that Dabawenyos are thrilled with the newest, albeit temporary, entertainment facility in Davao. The Carnival right in front of the NCCC Mall has always been filled with people since the first day of its operations. And why not when the whole family can enjoy themselves havign simple fun at reasonable costs.

Entrance to the carnival is at P10 for both kids and adults while each ride costs P15 (whether you are a kid or adult). There are food stalls inside the carnival if you get thirsty or hungry from all the shouting you have to do.

The most in-demand rides are the Roller Coaster (not so high but since it is rarely found in Davao then it's a certified hit among those who want to pay for scaring themselves silly!) and the Scramble (and I did not dare find out why it got its name!). However, you will also have fun with the kids at the Flying Elephant, Amores and the Ferris Wheel. The Horror Ride is a fluke though. Nothing scary there really. In fact, I think the ghosts were more scared of scaring me so they didn't bother at all.

One thing though, someone from City Hall should remind the Carnival operator that Davao City has very strict non-smoking laws. There are kids all over the place (not to mention asthmatics) but the people operating the machines were like part of a whole tribe of Tikbalang who were smoking left and right.

Gaisano Mall Incident Raise Concerns Over Mall Security And Preparedness

Is Gaisano Mall prepared for emergency situations?

The death of a woman who fell down from an escalator on the 4th level of Gaisano Mall is a tragic "accident" which raised concerns about the safety of the different malls in Davao City. Dabawenyos may think that safety and security is equal to beign free from bomb scare and the likes. However, this incident should make Davao mall owners think twice about how safe the location of their escalators are. Another question which should be answered by the malls is if they have security provisions for such an eventuality.

Staff and employee preparedness in cases of emergency such as the fall of that woman from the 4th level is very crucial. There was one incident involving city councilor Rachel Zozobrado and her kids at Gaisano Mall. In a privilege speech delivered at the SP last November, Zozobrado recounted how the security personnel of Gaisano Mall refused to let her and her kids out (including other customers) despite a 20-minute brownout in the mall. She said she decided to get out as soon as possible since there were no emergency lights inside the mall and the children were already scared.

Perhaps the City Council should take a look at the security measures and preparations being done not only by Gaisano Mall but the other malls in town. Maybe the security guards should concentrate less on literally putting a check mark on the already paid purchases of their customers and look after the latter's safety first.

How To Win One Of The 3 Kia Picanto At Gaisano Citimal

Before SM City Davao and before NCCC Mall, there was the good old JS Gaisano. Any Dabawenyo who frequented the city's few shopping malls wayback in the 1990s (or was it late 1980's?) will always remember the large fairy-tale like staircase leading to JS Gaisano's second floor. But this was before the fire which gutted the mall. It became known as JS Gaisano Citimall under the management of John Y. Gaisano. Back then, JS Citimall was famous for its entertainment shows at the 5th Level. It's marketing people always came up with promos and shows to lure people to the shopping center. Well. how can they not when Sir John always kept them on their toes. He was a hands-on manager who knew what went on his store. of bigger malls like SM and NCCC, people began to outgrow JS Citimall. I am not sure anymore whose hands JS Gaisano is under but I think the store is beginning to wake up from slumber. Their foodstreet was transferred to the 5th and some seats were placed along the grocery area for those who want to take a quick bite.

They also launched a new promo "Cars & Cash" where they will be giving away 3 Picanto cars--these really cute cars and in my favorite color at that--RED! The promo runs from November 17, 2007 to March 15, 2008. I just hope they assign better staff to take care of the raffles since the woman who was supposedly in charge of counting the raffles was so rude and didn't have the basic skills in handling customers. She also had with her a defective calculator ---to think that she was supposed to be doing the math for the raffle stubs like one stub for every P200 purchase from the Department Store. I haven't had any negative experiences with the other sales people on the top floors; in fact the people at the toys section were very nice. Maybe that girl is just having a bad hair day, oh well. I hope the Citimall Management do something about this soon before they alienate their customers again.

Gaisano Citimall has also launched a ard membership promo much like the NCCC Shoppers Card and SM's Advantage Card. I think the free membership offer expired last November---well haven't submitted mine actually since I really do not shop much here but I'm looking forward to a more vibrant Gaisano Citimall. I used to be a PR consultant with JS Citimall and I know how John Gaisano worker hard to make Citimall one of the best shops in the city. Sad to see something that used to be good for the people of Davao go down the drain. So here's goodluck to the new management---keep it going!

Davao malls all set for X'mas

The various malls and department stores in Davao City are all prepped up for the Holiday Season and each is outdoing the other in terms of their Christmas displays. Talk about commercializing Christmas!

SM City Davao has a nice display of various Christmas trees in all colors. The usual color motif for Christmas trees are red, white, orange and blue. If you want to be different this year, yu an buy the black Christmas balls and otehr blak decorations to math your white Christmas tree right at SM.

Gaisano Mall of Davao reserved their Atrium or activity area for all your Christmas decoration needs and the items are so far cheaper than SM. However, no one can beat the 10% discount offered by JS Citimall on all Christmas decorations so hurry while they still have some wonderful pieces. The JS Citimall display is not as extensive as SM City though.
NCCC Mall has the best Christmas display as they usually have a theme for their decorations so expect similar patterns within the Mall.
